Project Title: RADICAL (RApid Deployment and adoption of sustainable socially-aware and intelligent sensing services for emerging smart cities)

Project Duration: 36 months

Start Date: 01 March 2013

Funding Authority: ICT Policy Support Programme (PSP) as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP)

Type of Instrument: Pilot B

Status: Completed

Project Objectives

The main  goal  of the project is  to  provide the means for cities and SMEs to rapidly develop, deploy, replicate, pilot and evaluate a diverse set of sustainable ICT services that leverage established Internet-of-things and social networking infrastructures. These services will address the main societal and business challenges that are targeted by modern smart cities.

To this  end, RADICAL will take advantage of available R&D results (in the scope of background FP7 projects of the  consortium partners) in order to integrate a novel ICT platform enabling the rapid development and deployment of pervasive multi-sensory and socially-aware  services  for  urban  environments  and  territories.  Based  on  the  RADICAL platform the project partners (notably the SME integrators) will develop, deploy and pilot seven distinct  pilot services dealing with Cycling Safety Improvement, Products Carbon Footprint Management, Object-driven  Data  Journalism,  Participatory  Urbanism,  Augmented  Reality,  Eco-consciousness  and  the  Commercial  and  Transactional Data for Pedestrian Flows. These pilot services will be accordingly replicated across several smart cities of the consortium, taking into account the peculiarities of the various cities in terms of their technical infrastructures, socio-economical characteristics and legal environments. While all the services will be deployed across multiple smart cities, a living labs approach involving representative samples of the population will be employed in order to study the penetration and sustainability of the services within each individual city.
