This time we were in Dublin. The city of James Joyce and the smart city with old and historical lighting but full of sensors and cameras. Windy but not cold weather, trees getting green after the drops of blossom of pinky flowers while enjoying the Future Internet Assembly in the Helix, DCU Campus. Mario Campolargo the Director of the Net Futures has been the motivator and leader of the all week. The Assembly started on May 7th, 2013 with the workshops of all future internet related FP7 and CIP projects where IoT and Smart City projects were mostly presented. There were stands of the projects making dissemination and even the new projects already started disseminating. The second day which is supposed to be the opening of the assembly, May 8th 2013 was full of new concepts related with the technology and innovation and the visibility of the industry was remarkable like Intel, Bocsh and Ericsson. The Digital Single Market concept was at the top of the day where it was assumed as The Telecom Single Market Europe.
Secondly, The next internet wave was announced as the internet of things and services. Although the talks seemed to be promising, the business side was very disappointed that the result of that session was merely to go to USA for doing business. European organizations seemed to be very disappointed with the crisis and no more hope for Europe. Reversely, Europe is very promising with all the new technology developments and innovations, but there is need of change of making business and investing. Whereas, I saw in the next day, May 9th, 2013 the last session of the day, the EU-US Innovation Programme, the US organizations in fact are not ahead, we Europeans doing the same, we are of the same level, but way of doings are different. The GENI project was very interesting where it is the infrastructure for the future internet developers including Virtual Lab slices, deep programmability and install software features where was sustained by industry collaboration and US NSF funding and its platform for the application developers is US-Ignite which is another project. This is not much different than the FI-Ware and XI-FI Projects are doing. But the PPP model is a bit different. But what I saw is that Europe should have more confidence and courage to continue and develop more on how to market itself. This is the point.
The IoT apps and implementations were at the heart of the assembly sessions. Especially the presentation of the General Manager of WorldSensing was very attractive by his red shoes but not on the content side unfortunately.
FI-Ware Open Innovation Lab (FI-WARE OIL) was launched for the Cities, large players with a lot of data to join and the New release of FI-Ware test bed would be launched on 31st of July 2013. The FI-Ware Project which will be the platform for the pilot implementations was introduced and a call for funding the user projects to be implemented with FI-Ware would be opened on May 16th, 2013. FI-Ware mainly deals with Big Data, rich set of libraries are provided which is a generic enabler for the usage of APIs, offering rich web-based user interfaces as an advanced web user interface developers, for also augmented reality application developer/integrators and has a standard open architecture and a truly open environment
There will also be a call for the industry implementations of the second stage projects like FITMAN, FISPACE and XIFI. Most of them will make a call between July-September 2013.
The last day, May 10th, 2013 was the day for the closure where the awards of the best presentations, posters and demos were given and the FI-PPP 3rd Phase Project call was launched. The Convergence Project has won the poster award which was really interesting and fun. The session about OPEN DATA was very interesting and most of the key persons of the assembly were participated. Besides the applications and projects an important view is appeared; Open Data is still not very clear for everybody and a definition should be redone. An Open Data Regulatory Framework is needed to be designed. This is also an important opportunity for Turkey to contribute and collaborate to design also the one in Turkey. This also put in the table to deal with the Data protection privacy rules. The smart city projects like OUTSMART and SmartSantander in CIP were the mostly shown in front projects.
FI-PPP 3rd Phase Project call was introduced by EC where the objective 1.8 (expansion of use cases) is for the user implementations of FI-Ware Project which should be mostly SMEs but the projects should be modeled in sectoral, regional or large company ecosystem levels. The consortium should be composed of many different companies like SME Associations, public organizations, regional development agencies for the management of the call opening and funding the SMEs and web entrepreneurs. Develop apps and services based on technology phase 2 of the FI-WARE Project should be taken into account. Implementations of generic enablers (catalogs) by different companies and specifications are open.
The launch will be in September 2-6, 2013 with a Campus Party in London and there will be trainings on how to use the enablers. But it was also discussed on the IPR side and EC is going to check the terms and conditions. This call will be a good opportunity for the SMEs and web entrepreneurs to be part of the European Future Internet Network and to learn and use the generic enablers for their applications and projects. But first, a consortium of organizations will apply for the call with projects covering different sectors, regions or an ecosystem around a big player like a telecom company. The objective 1.9 (Technology foundation extension and usage) where CSAs will be funded for the dissemination and creating networks for the future Internet is also a good opportunity especially for Turkey.
The night of the opening event was very interesting joining whole European Future Internet community by enjoying the ancient Irısh music with the artist playing Uilleann pipe and the Indian girl dancing with the Irısh music.
As a result, Europe is progressing and it seems that cooperation with US will have an advantage for the Global Future Internet developments.
